Driving Change: The Dynamic Women of ‘F1: The Movie’

When Lewis Hamilton signed on to co-produce F1: The Movie, there was hope for authenticity on technical and diversity aspects. The fictional APX GP team included a female technical director and a multicultural cast, aligning with Hamilton’s push for diversity in motorsport. However, the film missed the mark by portraying the female technical director as inept and a love interest. Director Joe Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, known for Top Gun: Maverick, failed to depict women in F1 without reinforcing gender stereotypes. F1: The Movie’s depiction of women’s struggles solely based on their gender is disappointing, as seen through the characters like ‘wheel gun girl’ and the technical director Kate. The film’s narrative and portrayal of women in positions of power do not live up to the standard set by other modern films, undercutting the progress towards inclusivity in the sport.
